Bamboo is a relatively recent innovation in fabric and clothes production. It has a number of properties that make it an excellent choice for sportswear, people who suffer from skin allergies and just as a sheer joy to wear ... or go to sleep between.
Why Bamboo? Well, it has an incredibly quick growth rate and its mature stems are harvested only once the new replacement stems start to grow.
What does this mean? It means that forested areas are never totally depleted and they are also pesticide free.
Is it biodegradeable? Yes. Bamboo fibre is hailed as the natural, green and eco-friendly textile material for the 21st century.
Does that make it expensive? No. It is a lower cost alternative to fine silk and cashmere yarns and more environmentally friendly than cotton which uses many heavy pesticides and a lot of water in its manufacture.
What makes it so special?
extremely soft and comfortable to the touch.
the anti-bacterial property of the plant is maintained within the fabric, so it does not require the use of chemical anti-bacterial agents.
it has been found to have a unique anti-bacteria and bacteriastatasis bio-agent "bamboo kun" which is maintained in the finished fabric as it is bound tightly to the bamboo's cellulose molecules.
as a plant, bamboo is highly absorbent and able to take up to 3 times its weight in water. In the fabric, this equates to an excellent wicking ability that pulls moisture away from the skin so that it can evaporate.
it has insulating properties that keeps you cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
it has an unusual level of breathability, making it incredibly cool and comfortable to wear. With its unique microstructure it can absorb and evaporate human sweat very quickly.
the fabric retains its anti-bacterial properties even through multiple washes. This helps to reduce bacteria that thrive on clothing and cause unpleasant odours. It can also kill odours causing bacteria that live on the skin, making your clothes smell less.
the fibre is naturally smooth and round without chemical treatment, meaning there are no sharp spurs to irritate the skin. Therefore, many people who experience an allergic reaction to other natural fibres do not complain of this with bamboo.
